SIMONE SIGNORET AND YVES MONTAND - Lot 227
SIMONE SIGNORET AND YVES MONTAND During a rehearsal of *The Crucible*, a stage adaptation of Arthur Miller’s novel by Marcel Aymé and directed by Raymond Rouleau, 1954. Photo by Studio Bernand, vintage silver gelatin print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. Note: 23.5 x 18.2 cm, including white border. Note: This photograph, taken in 1954 by Studio Bernand, shows Simone Signoret and Yves Montand during a rehearsal of *The Crucible*, the French adaptation of Arthur Miller’s play translated by Marcel Aymé and directed by Raymond Rouleau. Staged at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt in Paris, this production had a profound impact on postwar French theater. The production brought together two of the greatest artistic figures of their generation: Simone Signoret, then on the rise, and Yves Montand, already recognized as a singer and actor. Arthur Miller’s play, inspired by the Salem witch trials, was widely seen as a condemnation of the excesses of McCarthyism in the United States, giving it strong political and intellectual resonance. This vintage print thus serves as a valuable testament to the history of French theater and the collaboration between two major figures of the 20th-century cultural scene.
