SEBASTIEN - Lot 230
SEBASTIEN *Ballet du marquis de Cuevas*, libretto and music by Gian-Carlo Menotti, choreography by Edward Caton, featuring Rosella Hightower, with costumes and sets designed by Leonor Fini, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées—Paris, 1958. 3 photographs by Studio Bernand, labeled (tag) on one reverse side and stamped with the photographer’s mark on all reverse sides. 18 x 19 cm to 24.3 cm x 18.2 cm. Note: This set of three photographs taken in 1958 by Studio Bernand documents the ballet *Sébastien*, presented at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées by the Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas. The work brings together several major figures in the artistic scene of the time: a libretto and music by Gian Carlo Menotti, choreography by Edward Caton, a performance by prima ballerina Rosella Hightower, and sets and costumes designed by Leonor Fini. This collaboration illustrates the richness of the interplay between dance, music, theater, and the visual arts in major postwar choreographic productions. Rosella Hightower, one of the greatest ballerinas of her generation, contributed significantly to the international prestige of ballet, while Leonor Fini brought her dreamlike and refined world to the stage. These vintage prints thus serve as precious records of a performance that brought together several major figures of European artistic life in the 1950s.
