FRANÇOIS MITTERRAND - Lot 241
FRANÇOIS MITTERRAND Snapshot… 1950s. Photo by Bernard Lipnitzki, vintage silver print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. 26 x 18.8 cm. Dust on the print and pronounced grain. Note: This photograph, taken in the 1950s by Bernard Lipnitzki, depicts François Mitterrand at a pivotal moment in his political career. Already active in public life under the Fourth Republic, he held several ministerial posts at the time and was gradually establishing himself as one of the rising stars of the French political scene. Taken in a spontaneous style reminiscent of a “snapshot,” this portrait stands out from the official photographs typically published in the political press of the time. Bernard Lipnitzki, whose photojournalism is now a valuable source for 20th-century French cultural and political history, immortalized numerous figures from the worlds of the arts, literature, and public life. This vintage print is therefore of particular documentary interest, as it depicts the future President of the Republic several decades before his election to the Élysée in 1981.
