ROWLAND EMMETT - Lot 243
ROWLAND EMMETT Cartoonist and kinetic sculptor, and his humorous work "The Forget-Me-Not Computer," commissioned by computer manufacturer Honeywell, 1966. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned (dated label), stamped, and annotated on the back. 25 x 20.5 cm, including white borders. Signs of aging. Note: This photograph, taken in 1966, shows Rowland Emett standing next to *The Forget-Me-Not Computer*, one of his most famous creations, commissioned by Honeywell. A British illustrator, caricaturist, and sculptor, Emett gained international renown for his whimsical machines that blended humor, imaginary engineering, and mechanical poetry. As a heir to the British tradition of nonsense and burlesque invention, he developed a world populated by extravagant automata and deliberately useless mechanisms, which have become emblematic of his work. Conceived at a time when computing was undergoing rapid development, *The Forget-Me-Not Computer* humorously subverts the then-futuristic image of the computer by presenting a complex and absurd machine, typical of Emett’s spirit. This vintage print thus serves as a valuable testament to the convergence of kinetic art, design, humor, and technological culture in the 1960s.
