ELEPHANT DEPANNAGE… - Lot 247
ELEPHANT DEPANNAGE… Dodge car… 1929. Photograph, vintage silver print, newspaper clipping, stamped with date and annotated on the back. 20 x 25.5 cm, including white borders. Note: This photograph, taken in 1929, shows a Dodge vehicle belonging to the company “Éléphant Dépannage,” which specialized in towing and roadside assistance. In the late 1920s, the automobile industry experienced rapid growth, accompanied by the emergence of new services related to its use, notably roadside assistance and the towing of vehicles involved in accidents or that had broken down. The imposing Dodge trucks, renowned for their sturdiness, were among the vehicles best suited for these technical tasks at the time. Published in the press of the time, as evidenced by the clipping preserved on the reverse, this image documents a still-underrepresented aspect of the history of the automobile and urban services. This vintage print thus serves as a fascinating record of the evolution of transportation, road-related professions, and infrastructure modernization in the early 20th century.
