THE TEARS OF THE ARMISTICE… - Lot 251
THE TEARS OF THE ARMISTICE… July 14, 1940, in Vichy… Photo by Raymond Brajou, vintage silver print, stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. 24 x 18 cm. Note: This photograph, taken on July 14, 1940, in Vichy by Raymond Brajou, is known by the evocative title *The Tears of the Armistice*. Taken a few weeks after the French defeat and the signing of the armistice on June 22, 1940, it captures the atmosphere of sadness, dismay, and uncertainty that prevailed among much of the French population at the time. As the national holiday was celebrated under exceptional circumstances, Vichy was preparing to become the seat of the new government led by Marshal Pétain. This image captures a particularly sensitive historical moment, at the beginning of a period that would profoundly transform the history of France. Taken by Raymond Brajou, this vintage print is a valuable record of the first months of the Occupation and the collective emotions stirred by the events of the summer of 1940. Signs of handling on one edge and some dust on the print. Note:
