WOMEN'S BILLIARDS - Lot 256
WOMEN'S BILLIARDS Three-Cushion Championship, 1934. Photo by Henri Manuel, vintage silver print, annotated along the top edge, stamped by the photographer, and captioned and dated on the back. 18 x 13 cm, including white borders. Upper corners have been touched up. Note: This photograph, taken in 1934 by Henri Manuel, documents a women’s French billiards championship, a discipline that was very popular at the time in sports and social circles. Focusing specifically on three-cushion billiards—one of the most technically demanding variants of carom billiards—it attests to the growing presence of women in sports competitions during the interwar period. At a time when women’s sports were experiencing significant growth, such events contributed to the evolution of recreational activities and increased the visibility of female competitors in disciplines long dominated by men. Henri Manuel, one of the most renowned portraitists and press photographers of his time, left behind an exceptional record of political, artistic, athletic, and social life in the first half of the 20th century. This vintage print is thus a valuable document on the history of women’s sports and the world of competitive billiards in the 1930s.
