BEFORE MAY 1968? - Lot 263
BEFORE MAY 1968? Sit-in on Rue Soufflot (Panthéon, Sorbonne…)—Paris, 1951. Photo, vintage silver print, newspaper clipping, date stamp, and annotated on the back. 20.3 x 22.4 cm (one white edge trimmed). Signs of handling, visible mainly when held up to the light. Note: This photograph, taken in 1951 on Rue Soufflot, between the Panthéon and the Sorbonne, shows a *sitting* protest in Paris’s Latin Quarter. Long before the events of May 1968, the image illustrates the existence of forms of collective protest and peaceful occupation of public space that were already present in postwar France. The area around the Sorbonne and the Panthéon has long been a focal point for student, intellectual, and political mobilizations, which gives this document particular significance in light of the movements that would mark this same neighborhood seventeen years later. Accompanied by its original press clippings, this photograph bears witness to the history of urban protests and civic engagement in mid-20th-century Paris. As a period print, it serves as an interesting historical document on the forms of collective mobilization that preceded the major social movements of the following decades.
