ANDRE MALRAUX - Lot 299
ANDRE MALRAUX Portrait, 1950s. Photograph by Yousuf Karsh, vintage silver gelatin print, captioned, labeled, stamped, and annotated on the reverse. 16.5 x 12 cm. Note: This photograph, taken in the 1950s by Yousuf Karsh, depicts André Malraux, one of the most important intellectual and political figures in 20th-century France. A writer, essayist, member of the Resistance, and future Minister of Cultural Affairs under General de Gaulle, Malraux established himself as a major figure as early as the 1930s thanks to works such as *La Condition humaine* (1933 Prix Goncourt) and *L’Espoir*. His involvement in the Resistance and his subsequent dedication to French cultural policy helped make him one of the most influential intellectuals of his time. The photographer behind this portrait, Yousuf Karsh, is considered one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. Famous for his photographs of Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, Albert Einstein, and Pablo Picasso, Karsh was able to reveal the personality and stature of his subjects through his portraits, thanks to his exceptional mastery of light and composition. Bringing together two major figures of international culture, this vintage silver gelatin print is a valuable testament to the intellectual and artistic history of the last century. The photograph has been handled, particularly showing tears in the paper (especially at the corners).
