MONTE CARLO CENTENNIAL - Lot 40
MONTE CARLO CENTENNIAL Monaco, Casino, fireworks Vintage lithographic poster, designed by Cecil Beaton, printed by Imp. Monégasque. 84 x 124 cm. The poster shows signs of handling and has tears, particularly along the edges (with a few small missing pieces at the corners), which have been reinforced on the reverse with small pieces of lightweight restoration tape. The poster requires mounting. Note: Created to celebrate the centennial of Monte Carlo (1866–1966), this poster is an elegant lithograph designed by Cecil Beaton, the renowned British photographer, costume designer, and set designer. In a refined style blending fashion illustration and theatrical set design, Beaton depicts a couple in evening attire admiring the festivities from a terrace overlooking the Monte Carlo Casino. Framed by two allegorical female figures holding a garland of flowers, the composition opens onto a spectacle of fireworks, lush gardens, and an elegant crowd, celebrating the Principality’s prestige and art of living. The poster perfectly captures Monte Carlo’s image as an international destination for luxury, gambling, and high society, a reputation cultivated since the second half of the 19th century by the Société des Bains de Mer. The choice of Cecil Beaton, a leading figure in fashion photography and the decorative arts, reinforces this glamorous and sophisticated vision, in which the elegance of the figures complements the casino’s iconic architecture and the festive atmosphere of the French Riviera. Printed by the Imprimerie Monégasque, this period lithograph is a remarkable piece of tourism promotional material and a testament to the celebration of Monte Carlo’s centennial. Despite signs of handling, reinforced tears, and the need for mounting, it retains strong decorative appeal and definite historical significance.
