IRENE JONAS (1957) - Lot 71
IRENE JONAS (1957) Budapest Baths Colored with oil paint on matte paper One-of-a-kind piece Image dimensions: 24 x 24 cm Dimensions with mat: 40 x 30 cm Note: In this work, Irène Jonas returns more fully to the communal aspect of the baths: the image is no longer centered on a single figure but on a crowd of bathers scattered amid the steam, their bodies half-emerging from the water. The large vertical jet on the right strongly structures the composition: it acts almost like a column of light that cuts across the image and accentuates the sense of movement, warmth, and the saturation of the space. The color palette remains very subtle, with the cool blues of the water and the cream, gray, and golden tones of the steam and the building’s lights, creating an atmosphere that is at once nocturnal, subdued, and somewhat surreal. What’s interesting here is that Jonas captures less an “event” than a collective atmosphere: the faces are often blurred or partially obscured by the mist, so that the image speaks as much to the community of bodies as it does to the dissolution of individuality in the sensory experience of the bath.
