IRENE JONAS (1957) - Lot 73
IRENE JONAS (1957) Budapest Baths Colored with oil paint on matte paper One-of-a-kind piece Image dimensions: 24 x 24 cm Dimensions with mat: 40 x 30 cm Note: Here, Jonas takes the logic of the discreet moment and the off-screen space almost to the extreme. The image is very minimalist: a single figure, seen from behind, wearing a pink bathrobe, captured just as they are stepping through a doorway or about to enter an interior space. We are no longer among the crowd, nor even in the pool, but in a silent, almost anecdotal moment of transition, which the photographer transforms into a self-contained image. The composition is very stable, almost geometric, organized around the verticality of the column, the door frames, and the isolated silhouette. This restraint lends a more meditative tone than the views of baths filled with steam and bathers: the thermal spa appears here as a space for movement, pause, and retreat. The very restrained use of color plays an essential role because it highlights the pale pink of the bathrobe amid the off-whites, grays, and beiges of the architecture. This small splash of color is enough to humanize the space and lend the image an almost melancholic softness, as if Jonas were less interested in the spectacle of the baths than in the ordinary gestures, the comings and goings, and the fleeting presences that inhabit the place.
