PAULINE A LA PLAGE - Lot 39
PAULINE A LA PLAGE Amanda Langlet, Arielle Dombasle, Pascal Greggory, film by Eric Rohmer, 1983. 12 exploitation stills (color on card stock) in their original vintage sleeves; a publicity card is enclosed. 23.5 x 30 cm each photo; 28 x 20 cm cardboard. A few thumbtack holes in some corners of photos and cardboard; sleeve handled. Note: Produced for Éric Rohmer's 1983 film Pauline à la plage, these promotional photographs capture all the apparent lightness and psychological finesse that characterize the director's cinema. Between Normandy beaches bathed in summer light, refined interiors and the interplay of glances, Rohmer composes a sentimental chronicle in which desires, lies and misunderstandings of love unfold with remarkable precision. The images featuring Amanda Langlet, Arielle Dombasle and Pascal Greggory perfectly convey this sunny, elegant yet melancholy atmosphere. A major figure of the Nouvelle Vague, Éric Rohmer develops in Pauline à la plage a cinema of dialogue and observation, where feelings are revealed through the simplest gestures and everyday conversations. The film plays an essential role in the Comedies and Proverbs series, subtly exploring love relationships and the illusions of adulthood as seen through the eyes of an adolescent girl. These vintage exploitation photographs bear witness to a profoundly literary and modern cinema, whose delicacy and intelligence continue to leave a lasting mark on the history of French cinema.
