FOLIES-BERGERE

Photograph, later silver print (1950s), stamped and annotated on the back.
Dust in the print.
Note: This photograph is dedicated to *La Folie du Jour*, a revue presented at the Folies-Bergère in 1926 and renowned for helping to introduce Josephine Baker to Parisian audiences. Having arrived in France in the mid-1920s, the American artist enjoyed a meteoric rise thanks to her talent as a dancer, her charisma, and her modernity, quickly becoming one of the most iconic figures of European music hall. At that time, the Folies-Bergère played a central role in Parisian nightlife and helped shape the emergence of new forms of entertainment blending dance, music, exoticism, and the avant-garde. Produced in the 1950s from an older photograph, this print bears witness to the enduring fascination with Josephine Baker and the significance of her early career in the history of Parisian entertainment. It is thus an interesting document dedicated to one of the greatest icons of 20th-century music hall.
