Note: Set of two photographs depicting Boris Karloff and Colin Clive in Frankenstein, a horror film directed by James Whale for Universal Pictures and released in 1931. Considered one of the founding monuments of American fantasy cinema, this film freely adapts Mary Shelley's novel and definitively establishes the image of the monster incarnated by Boris Karloff in the collective imagination. Colin Clive plays Dr. Frankenstein in an expressionist staging that has become emblematic of Universal Studios' golden age.
These later prints, made for a re-release of the film in the 1950s, testify to Frankenstein's enduring popularity decades after its initial release. Photographs related to the "Universal Monsters" cycle are among the most sought-after documents of classic American fantasy cinema.
