Note: Collected as a set, these five original press prints capture several defining moments in Yves Montand’s career between 1977 and 1981, as photographed by Walter Carone, one of the leading figures at the Sygma agency. Three of the photographs are from the series shot in November 1977 to mark the release of Joseph Losey’s film *Les Routes du Sud*. The original captions note that Montand, who was usually discreet about his private life, had exceptionally agreed to pose for this photo session, which features him in portraits as well as on the streets of Montmartre and in front of a Parisian newsstand. The other two photographs document his film career in the late 1970s and early 1980s: one shows him alongside Costa-Gavras during the filming of *Clair de femme* (1979), the other with Gérard Depardieu during the filming of Alain Corneau’s *Le Choix des armes* (1981). A remarkable testament to the golden age of French photojournalism, this collection illustrates Walter Carone’s documentary eye as he captures one of the greatest figures in French cinema and music.
