Note: This color photograph shows Maurice Estève in his home during the 1980s. A leading figure of the New School of Paris, Estève developed a distinctive body of work based on color, light, and the balance of forms, occupying a central place in the history of postwar French painting. Rejecting both geometric abstraction and traditional figuration, he developed a personal artistic language in which colorful forms are arranged into compositions of great poetic intensity. The significance of this print is enhanced by the signature and the handwritten inscription addressed to Gaston Cauvin, attesting to the artist’s relationships with his circle of collectors and art lovers.
