CATHERINE DENEUVE AND LUIS BUNUEL - Lot 10
CATHERINE DENEUVE AND LUIS BUNUEL During the filming of Luis Buñuel’s movie “Tristana,” 1970. Photo, later print (1980s) on RC paper, annotated on the back. 30.2 x 23.8 cm, including white borders. Note: Directed by Luis Buñuel in 1970 and based on the novel by Benito Pérez Galdós, *Tristana* marks the filmmaker’s second collaboration with Catherine Deneuve, three years after *Belle de Jour*. The actress plays a young orphan placed under the guardianship of Don Lope, an aging aristocrat portrayed by Fernando Rey, who exerts moral and sexual control over her. Gradually, Tristana breaks free, only for illness and the amputation of one of her legs to bring her back to her former guardian, in a cruel reversal of the power dynamic. Filmed primarily in Toledo, the film allows Deneuve to contrast her radiant appearance with a dark and ambiguous performance. This photograph shows the actress alongside Luis Buñuel during the filming of this major work, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
