SIMONE SIGNORET AND JEAN GABIN - Lot 17
SIMONE SIGNORET AND JEAN GABIN During the filming of Pierre Granier-Deferre’s movie “Le Chat,” based on the novel by Georges Simenon, 1971. Photograph, vintage silver print on card stock, stamped and annotated on the back. 19.8 x 29.8 cm. Some signs of handling, visible mainly when held up to the light. Note: Directed by Pierre Granier-Deferre in 1971 and based on the novel by Georges Simenon, *Le Chat* brought Simone Signoret and Jean Gabin together for the first time. They play Clémence and Julien Bouin, an aging couple trapped in a house in Courbevoie slated for demolition. After twenty-five years of marriage, they barely speak to each other and communicate only through short notes, trapped behind closed doors where Julien’s attachment to a cat fuels Clémence’s jealousy. The gradual disappearance of their neighborhood echoes the collapse of their relationship, where hatred still masks a deep emotional dependence. The silent confrontation between these two major figures of French cinema earned Jean Gabin and Simone Signoret the Best Actor and Best Actress awards at the 1971 Berlinale.
