MICHELINE PRESLES AND GERARD PHILIPE - Lot 18
MICHELINE PRESLES AND GERARD PHILIPE During the filming of Claude Autant-Lara’s movie “Le Diable au corps,” 1947. Photo by Raymond Voinquel, vintage silver gelatin print on card stock, credits (including the photographer) in the image, stamped and annotated on the back. 27.7 x 20.7 cm including margins. Note: Directed by Claude Autant-Lara in 1947, based on the novel by Raymond Radiguet, *Le Diable au corps* tells the story, set during World War I, of the forbidden passion between François, a high school student played by Gérard Philipe, and Marthe, a young woman portrayed by Micheline Presle whose husband is fighting at the front. With its non-judgmental portrayal of adultery and a love made possible by the war, the novel caused a scandal upon its publication in 1923; its film adaptation, in turn, sparked strong reactions in postwar France. Micheline Presle’s sensuality and fragility, contrasted with Gérard Philipe’s youthful intensity, helped establish both actors as major stars of French cinema. This photograph was taken by Raymond Voinquel, a prominent set photographer officially credited in the film’s opening credits.
