ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND MONTGOMERY CLIFT - Lot 21
ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND MONTGOMERY CLIFT Scene from George Stevens’ film “A Place in the Sun,” 1951. Photograph, vintage silver print, credits below the image, stamped and annotated on the back. 19.6 x 25.7 cm. Signs of handling, particularly the upper white border, which is partially cut off. Note: Directed by George Stevens in 1951 and based on Theodore Dreiser’s novel *An American Tragedy*, *A Place in the Sun* tells the story of George Eastman, a young man from a humble background played by Montgomery Clift, who is determined to rise in society. His encounter with Angela Vickers, a wealthy heiress played by Elizabeth Taylor, offers him a glimpse of the life he aspires to, but his previous affair with a factory worker played by Shelley Winters leads him toward a tragic conclusion. Stevens’ intimate direction and the remarkable chemistry between Taylor and Clift lend their love story an intensity that has become emblematic of Hollywood melodrama. The first of their three films together, this movie established Elizabeth Taylor in adult roles and earned Montgomery Clift an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. The film won six Oscars, including Best Director.
