MARIA CASARES AND JEAN MARAIS - Lot 22
MARIA CASARES AND JEAN MARAIS During the filming of Jean Cocteau's movie "Orpheus," 1950. Photo attributed to Roger Corbeau (no photo credit), vintage silver gelatin print, annotated on the back. Note: Directed by Jean Cocteau in 1950, *Orphée* transposes the ancient myth to postwar Paris. Jean Marais plays Orpheus, a famous poet fascinated by mysterious radio messages and by an enigmatic Princess, portrayed by Maria Casarès. She personifies Death and falls in love with Orpheus as he passes through mirrors in an attempt to find his wife, Eurydice. Through this world filled with secret passages, doubles, and messengers from the afterlife, Cocteau develops a poetic meditation on creation, love, and death. Maria Casarès’s solemn presence complements Jean Marais’s intensity in one of the filmmaker’s most iconic works. In the absence of a credit on the print, the attribution of this set photograph to Roger Corbeau should be treated with caution. 15.2 x 20 cm. A corner has been slightly damaged.
