With its unique blend of humor, romance, and graphic violence, the film shattered Hollywood conventions and became one of the seminal works of New Hollywood. It introduced Faye Dunaway to the general public and received ten Oscar nominations, winning the awards for Best Supporting Actress for Estelle Parsons and Best Cinematography for Burnett Guffey.
