FRANCOISE FABIAN AND JEAN-LOUIS TRINTIGNANT - Lot 29
FRANCOISE FABIAN AND JEAN-LOUIS TRINTIGNANT Françoise Fabian, Éric Rohmer, and *My Night at Maud's*. Photograph, vintage silver print, annotated on the back. 18 x 23.8 cm. Note: Directed by Éric Rohmer in 1969, *Ma nuit chez Maud* is part of the *Six Moral Tales* series. Jean-Louis Trintignant plays a Catholic engineer living in Clermont-Ferrand, convinced that he has found his future wife in Françoise, a young woman he spotted at church. Invited to spend an evening at the home of Maud—a divorced, free-thinking doctor played by Françoise Fabian—he finds himself faced with a temptation that calls his certainties into question. The long night they spend together is dominated by their conversations about love, morality, religion, and Pascal’s Wager. Through the intelligence of its dialogue and the subtlety of the two actors’ performances, the film transforms an intimate encounter into a reflection on chance, desire, and the choices that shape a life. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 1969, it was subsequently nominated for Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay. One corner is slightly folded.
