HENRY FONDA AND VERA MILES. - Lot 31
HENRY FONDA AND VERA MILES. During the filming of Alfred Hitchcock’s *The Wrong Man* (1956). Photo, vintage silver print, credits below the image, annotated on the back. 25.6 x 20.3 cm including borders. Note: Directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1956, *The Wrong Man* is inspired by the true story of Christopher Emmanuel “Manny” Balestrero, a New York musician wrongly identified as the perpetrator of several robberies. Henry Fonda plays this ordinary man brutally confronted by the police and judicial system, while Vera Miles portrays his wife Rose, whose mental health deteriorates under the weight of the accusation. Filmed in black and white at several authentic New York locations, the film adopts a sober, almost documentary-style direction—unusual for Hitchcock. Far from his more spectacular thrillers, the filmmaker here transforms the recurring theme of the innocent man on the run into a particularly dark reflection on miscarriages of justice, guilt, and psychological fragility. Traces of manipulation visible only against the light.
