ANNA KARINA AND JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO - Lot 33
ANNA KARINA AND JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO Scene from Jean-Luc Godard’s film *Une femme est une femme*, 1961. Photograph, silver gelatin print on card stock, enhanced with period-style color; credits below the image; stamped and annotated on the back. 24 x 29 cm including edges. Staple holes in the corners. Note: Directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1961, *Une femme est une femme* is an iconic romantic musical comedy of the French New Wave. Anna Karina plays Angéla, a dancer in a Parisian cabaret who wants to have a child, despite the objections of her partner Émile, played by Jean-Claude Brialy. She then turns to Alfred, their friend played by Jean-Paul Belmondo, who readily declares his love for her. Godard’s first feature film in color and widescreen, the movie playfully subverts the conventions of the American musical thanks to Raoul Coutard’s vibrant colors and Michel Legrand’s disjointed score. Anna Karina, filmed as a figure who is both mischievous and melancholic, received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1961 Berlinale. The film also won the Special Jury Prize.
