ANNA KARINA AND JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY - Lot 34
ANNA KARINA AND JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY Scene from Jean-Luc Godard’s film *Une femme est une femme*, 1961. Photograph, silver gelatin print on card stock, enhanced with vintage color; credits below the image; stamp on the back. 24 x 29 cm including edges. Staple holes in the corners. Note: In *Une femme est une femme*, directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1961, Anna Karina plays Angéla, a cabaret dancer who wants to have a child, opposite Jean-Claude Brialy as Émile, her partner who is reluctant to become a father. Their relationship forms the heart of the film: arguments, provocations, and reconciliations unfold in the style of a romantic comedy loosely inspired by American musicals. In a now-famous scene, the two characters—determined not to speak to each other anymore—continue their argument by responding to one another solely with the titles of books they pull from their bookshelf. Godard’s first feature film in color and widescreen, the film draws on Anna Karina’s radiant energy and Jean-Claude Brialy’s whimsical charm. For this role, the actress received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 1961 Berlinale.
