INGRID BERGMAN AND ROBERTO ROSSELLINI - Lot 40
INGRID BERGMAN AND ROBERTO ROSSELLINI Standing around a camera and a clapperboard announcing the film "Europa 51," 1951. Photo, vintage silver gelatin print, captioned (dated label), press clipping pasted on, stamps (including date), and annotated on the back. Note: Gathered around a camera and the clapperboard from *Europa ’51*, Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini appear here in their respective roles as actress and director. The film is one of their major collaborations, following *Stromboli*. Bergman plays Irene Girard, a member of Rome’s upper class who, devastated by the death of her child, devotes herself to helping the most destitute. Her radical commitment, misunderstood by both those around her and the institutions, leads to her being committed to a psychiatric hospital. Rossellini thus contrasts his heroine’s compassion with the social, political, and religious divisions of postwar Italy. Filming began in 1951, but the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was released in 1952 18.3 x 22.8 cm, including white margins.
