BEBE DANIELS AND RUDOLPH VALENTINO - Lot 53
BEBE DANIELS AND RUDOLPH VALENTINO The Latin lover in a French-style suit... During the filming of Sidney Olcott's movie "Monsieur Beaucaire"; costumes by George Barbier & Natacha Rambova, 1924. Photo attributed to E. Russell Ball (no photo credit), vintage silver print, blank back. 25 x 20 cm including white borders. Note: Here, Rudolph Valentino sets aside the contemporary “Latin Lover” look in favor of the splendor of Louis XV’s court in *Monsieur Beaucaire*, a silent film by Sidney Olcott released in 1924. He plays the Duke of Chartres, who, rejected by Princess Henriette—played by Bebe Daniels—leaves France and takes refuge in England under the guise of a simple barber. Adapted from the novel by Booth Tarkington, the film relies in particular on the opulence of its historical reconstruction. The art direction was handled by Natacha Rambova, Valentino’s wife, who collaborated with the French illustrator George Barbier on the costume design.
