MICHELE MORGAN AND JEAN GABIN During the filming of Marcel Carné’s movie “Le Quai des brumes,” based on a screenplay by Jacques Prévert, 1938. Photograph, silver print on vintage card stock, stamped and annotated on the back. 19.8 x 33.3 cm. Signs of handling, some visible only when held up to the light. Note: In *Le Quai des brumes*, directed by Marcel Carné in 1938, Michèle Morgan and Jean Gabin play Nelly, a young orphan trapped in a troubling environment, and Jean, a deserter seeking a fresh start. Their encounter in the fog of the Port of Le Havre sparks a love story as brief as it is doomed. The film remains inextricably linked to the famous line written by Jacques Prévert: “You have beautiful eyes, you know.” ” At eighteen years old, Michèle Morgan found in this role the breakthrough that introduced her to the general public, opposite Jean Gabin, who was already at the height of his popularity. Adapted from the novel by Pierre Mac Orlan, the film combines Prévert’s dialogue, Alexandre Trauner’s set designs, Eugen Schüfftan’s cinematography, and Maurice Jaubert’s music. It stands as one of the iconic works of French poetic realism.
