CATHERINE DENEUVE AND JEAN SOREL - Lot 71
CATHERINE DENEUVE AND JEAN SOREL Scene from Luis Buñuel’s film *Belle de jour*, 1966. Photograph, vintage color print, unmarked on the back. 22.5 x 29.2 cm. Some signs of handling. Note: In Luis Buñuel’s *Belle de jour*, filmed in 1966 and released in 1967, Catherine Deneuve and Jean Sorel play Séverine and Pierre Serizy, a young couple from the Parisian bourgeoisie. The seemingly irreproachable wife of a caring surgeon, Séverine remains a prisoner of her fantasies and her inability to fully enjoy her marital intimacy. Unbeknownst to Pierre, she begins spending her afternoons at a brothel called “Belle de jour.” Adapted from Joseph Kessel’s novel, the film deliberately maintains an ambiguity between reality, memory, and the imagination. Catherine Deneuve’s detached performance, complemented by costumes designed by Yves Saint Laurent, helps cement her image of enigmatic elegance. *Belle de jour* won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1967.
