CONSTANCE BENNETT & CLARK GABLE - Lot 76
CONSTANCE BENNETT & CLARK GABLE Hollywood Glamour… on the set of Robert Z. Leonard’s film “After Office Hours” (Society Column); costumes by Adrian, 1935. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned and annotated on the back. 26 x 20.2 cm, including white borders. Some signs of handling (some visible only when held up to the light), particularly at the tips of some corners. Note: Hollywood glamour in *After Office Hours* (Society Column), a crime comedy directed by Robert Z. Leonard for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1935. Clark Gable plays Jim Branch, the authoritarian editor-in-chief of a major daily newspaper, while Constance Bennett portrays Sharon Norwood, a wealthy socialite turned journalist. Initially fired by Branch, who believes she is more interested in social events than in the profession, Sharon is quickly rehired when her connections in high society become essential to a murder investigation. Their professional rivalry is then compounded by a game of seduction. The film capitalizes on Constance Bennett’s sophisticated elegance and Gable’s charisma, having recently won an Oscar for *It Happened One Night*. The costumes were designed by Adrian, MGM’s iconic costume designer, while the screenplay was co-written by Herman J. Mankiewicz, among others.
