JEAN-PIERRE LEAUD AND MICHEL SEMENIAKO - Lot 77
JEAN-PIERRE LEAUD AND MICHEL SEMENIAKO Wearing masks… during the filming of Jean-Luc Godard’s movie “La Chinoise,” 1967. Photo, vintage silver print, stamped by the production company and annotated on the back. 12.5 x 17.7 cm. One corner slightly dog-eared. Note: Wearing masks during the filming of *La Chinoise*, directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1967. Jean-Pierre Léaud and Michel Séméniako play Guillaume and Henri, two of the five young people gathered in a Parisian apartment transformed into a Marxist-Leninist cell. Guillaume, a passionate actor fascinated by political theater, fervently embraces the group’s revolutionary rhetoric. Henri, on the other hand, adopts a more pragmatic and critical stance, particularly regarding the use of violence, which leads to his expulsion from the cell. Loosely inspired by Dostoevsky’s *The Demons*, the film blends fiction, slogans, colorful scenes, and ideological discussions. Filmed a year before May ’68, it captures both the aspirations and the contradictions of France’s Maoist youth. Michel Séméniako, a future photographer renowned for his work with light and landscape, plays one of his rare film roles here.
