ELEANOR POWELL AND FRED ASTAIRE - Lot 86
ELEANOR POWELL AND FRED ASTAIRE During the filming of Norman Taurog’s musical “Broadway Melody of 1940” (Broadway Dances), 1940. Photo, vintage silver print, stamped and annotated on the back. 25.8 x 20.6 cm including white margins. Some signs of handling, visible mainly when held up to the light. Note: The only on-screen collaboration between two major figures of Hollywood dance in *Broadway Melody of 1940*, a musical directed by Norman Taurog and released in 1940. Fred Astaire plays Johnny Brett, a talented dancer who loses a role in a Broadway show due to a case of mistaken identity, while Eleanor Powell plays Clare Bennett, the star of the production. Their virtuosity reaches its peak in the famous tap dance number “Begin the Beguine,” composed by Cole Porter and performed against a spectacular reflective backdrop. The film also marks Fred Astaire’s first major role at MGM following his successes with Ginger Rogers at RKO.
