STAN LAUREL AND OLIVER HARDY - Lot 88
STAN LAUREL AND OLIVER HARDY A burlesque duo in an unidentified film, 1930s. Photograph, vintage silver print, unmarked on the back. 20.4 x 25.6 cm, including white borders. Note: Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, the founding duo of slapstick comedy, are pictured here in a scene from a film that could not be identified. Their partnership, which began at the end of the silent film era, is based on the contrast between their characters: Laurel typically plays a naive, absent-minded, and clumsy figure, while Hardy embodies the pompous confidence of a man convinced he is in control of situations that invariably end up slipping beyond his grasp. The 1930s marked the duo’s heyday, as they successfully transitioned to talkies and alternated between short and feature-length films produced primarily by Hal Roach Studios. Together, they made more than a hundred films and established a style of comedy based as much on the interplay of their characters as on the methodical escalation of disasters.
