CYD CHARISSE AND FRED ASTAIRE - Lot 93
CYD CHARISSE AND FRED ASTAIRE
Scene from Vincente Minnelli’s musical film *The Band Wagon* (1953).
Photograph, period silver print, annotated on the back.
25.8 x 20.5 cm.
Note: In *The Band Wagon*, a musical directed by Vincente Minnelli and produced by MGM in 1953, Fred Astaire plays Tony Hunter, an aging musical film star trying to revive his career on Broadway. Cyd Charisse plays Gabrielle Gerard, a classical dancer hired as his partner despite the initial mistrust between the two artists. Their rivalry gradually gives way to a remarkable harmony—both choreographic and romantic. This is particularly evident in “Dancing in the Dark,” an elegant nocturnal pas de deux in Central Park, and later in “The Girl Hunt Ballet,” a spectacular homage to film noir. With its famous “That’s Entertainment!” number, the film serves as both a celebration of and a reflection on the world of show business. In *The Band Wagon*, a musical by Vincente Minnelli produced by MGM in 1953, Fred Astaire plays Tony Hunter, an aging musical film star trying to revive his career on Broadway.
