PATRICIA NEAL AND GARY COOPER - Lot 107
PATRICIA NEAL AND GARY COOPER Scene from King Vidor’s film *The Fountainhead*, 1949. Photograph, vintage silver print, credits on the image, stamps on the back. 20.5 x 25.3 cm. Note: In *The Fountainhead*, directed by King Vidor in 1949, Gary Cooper plays Howard Roark, a modernist architect who would rather turn down commissions than compromise his artistic independence. Patricia Neal plays Dominique Francon, a journalist and heiress fascinated by his integrity but convinced that a conformist society will inevitably destroy him. Their passionate relationship accompanies Roark’s struggle against institutions, critics, and clients who seek to alter his designs. Adapted from the novel published by Ayn Rand in 1943—who also wrote the screenplay herself—the film presents a radical defense of individualism and creative freedom. King Vidor’s monumental direction and the stylized architecture of the sets reinforce the symbolic dimension of this drama. There are a few signs of handling, particularly at the tip of a corner.
