BOURVIL AND JEAN GABIN - Lot 136
BOURVIL AND JEAN GABIN Scene from Claude Autant-Lara’s film “La Traversée de Paris,” 1956. Photograph, vintage silver print, stamped by the production company and annotated on the back. 12.8 x 17.7 cm. Note: In occupied Paris in 1943, Marcel Martin, an unemployed taxi driver played by Bourvil, secretly transports suitcases filled with meat destined for the black market. For this nighttime journey across the capital, he enlists the help of Grandgil, a provocative and unpredictable character played by Jean Gabin. Adapted from a short story by Marcel Aymé by Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost, the film contrasts Martin’s vulnerability with Grandgil’s insolent self-assurance. This first face-off between Bourvil and Gabin earned Bourvil the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival in 1956.
