ARLETTY AND JEAN GABIN - Lot 138
ARLETTY AND JEAN GABIN Scene from Marcel Carné’s film *Le Jour se lève* (Dawn Breaks), adapted by Jacques Prévert, 1939. Photograph, silver print on vintage cardstock, annotated on the back. 19 x 27.5 cm. Note: Jean Gabin plays François, a sandblasting worker barricaded in his room after killing Valentin, a manipulative dog trainer played by Jules Berry. Besieged by the police, he relives, through a series of flashbacks, the events that led him to commit the murder. Arletty plays Clara, Valentin’s former partner and an independent woman with whom François has a relationship, though he cannot bring himself to forget Françoise. Constructed as a tragedy of fate, *Le Jour se lève* stands as one of the pinnacles of French poetic realism and of the collaboration between Marcel Carné, Jacques Prévert, and production designer Alexandre Trauner. A few traces of handling visible only against the light.
