CELIA MONTALVAN AND CHARLES BLAVETTE - Lot 149
CELIA MONTALVAN AND CHARLES BLAVETTE Scene from Jean Renoir's film "Toni," 1935. Photo by Roger Corbeau, vintage silver gelatin print on card stock, photographer’s credit and stamp in the image, plus annotation on the back. 23.4 x 29 cm, including white borders. Some signs of handling. Note: Célia Montalván and Charles Blavette play Josépha and Antonio Canova, known as Toni. An Italian immigrant who came to work in the quarries of Provence, Toni falls in love with Josépha, a Spanish laborer coveted by their foreman Albert. Inspired by a real-life incident, the film sets this passionate drama against the social reality of immigrant workers in the Midi region. Filmed on location in the Martigues region, with several local actors, *Toni* is often considered one of the precursors of Italian neorealism. Produced in 1934, it was released in France on February 22, 1935.
