RITA HAYWORTH AND ORSON WELLES - Lot 157
RITA HAYWORTH AND ORSON WELLES Scene from the film "The Lady from Shanghai," 1947. Photograph, vintage silver print enhanced with period-style color, marked “Printed in USA” beneath the image, annotated on the back. Note: Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles play Elsa Bannister and Michael O’Hara. A free-spirited sailor, O’Hara is hired on the yacht of wealthy lawyer Arthur Bannister after rescuing his mysterious wife, Elsa. Fascinated by her, he allows himself to be drawn into a plan for a staged murder that turns into a full-blown criminal conspiracy. Orson Welles served as director, screenwriter, producer, and actor in this film. Completed in 1946, the film was first released in France in 1947, then in the United States in 1948. The last film to bring Welles and Hayworth—who were married at the time—together on screen, it remains famous for its baroque atmosphere and its final showdown in the Hall of Mirrors. 20.2 x 25.7 cm, including borders.
