JEANNE MOREAU AND MARCELLO MASTROIANNI - Lot 170
JEANNE MOREAU AND MARCELLO MASTROIANNI Scene from Michelangelo Antonioni’s film “La notte” (The Night), 1961. Photograph, vintage silver print, labeled (with a tag) on the back. 24 x 18 cm. Note: Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni play Lidia and Giovanni Pontano, a married couple whose relationship unravels over the course of a day and a night in Milan. Giovanni, a renowned writer, and Lidia, trapped in profound loneliness, make their way through a hospital, a literary reception, a cabaret, and finally a high-society party. Antonioni uses their silences, their aimless wanderings, and the modern architecture to reveal the distance between them. Along with *L’Avventura* and *L’Eclisse*, *La notte* is part of the filmmaker’s so-called “trilogy of incommunicability.” The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1961.
