CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND BUSTER KEATON - Lot 194
CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND BUSTER KEATON Scene from the film "Limelight" (1952). Photograph, later silver print (1960s), stamped and annotated on the back. 19.8 x 24.5 cm, including white borders. Signs of handling. Note: Charlie Chaplin plays Calvero, a former vaudeville star who has fallen into obscurity and temporarily returns to the stage for a gala organized in his honor. In the final sequence, he forms a musical duo with Buster Keaton—who plays his former partner—that is as virtuosic as it is clumsy: Chaplin plays the violin while Keaton takes his place at the piano. Their number relies on a series of technical mishaps and meticulously choreographed gags. This on-screen meeting of the two great figures of silent slapstick is one of the film’s most famous moments. Through Calvero, Chaplin offers a melancholic reflection on aging, the loss of fame, and the passing of the torch between artists.
