CAB CALLOWAY AND EARTHA KITT - Lot 197
CAB CALLOWAY AND EARTHA KITT During the filming of Allen Reisner’s musical, 1958. Photo, vintage silver print, stamped and annotated on the back. 25.3 x 20.6 cm, including white borders. Note: The missing film is *St. Louis Blues*. Loosely based on the life of composer W. C. Handy, considered one of the pioneers of the blues, it stars Nat King Cole in the lead role. Eartha Kitt plays Gogo Germaine, an ambitious singer who recognizes Handy’s talent and encourages him to pursue secular music despite the opposition of his father, a pastor. Cab Calloway plays Blade, a cabaret owner who hires the composer and his musicians. Their presence cements the film’s place in the history of African American jazz and blues. The cast also includes Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Pearl Bailey, and Ruby Dee, performing songs composed by W. C. Handy.
