MONICA VITTI AND MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI - Lot 199
MONICA VITTI AND MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI At the Flea Market… 1960s. Photo by Joël Brunerie, vintage silver gelatin print, photographer’s stamp on the back. 18.3 x 24 cm. Note: Monica Vitti and Michelangelo Antonioni were one of the defining duos of 1960s European cinema. The actress achieved international fame with *L’Avventura* in 1960, before reuniting with the director in *La Notte* in 1961, *L’Eclisse* in 1962, and *Il deserto rosso* in 1964. Through her performance—a blend of restraint, anxiety, and irony—she embodies the filmmaker’s major themes: the inability to communicate, the fragility of emotions, and alienation within modern society. Their collaboration contributed to a profound renewal of cinematic language, prioritizing silences, gestures, and spaces over traditional storytelling. Vitti, however, refused to be reduced to the status of a muse and went on to pursue a distinguished career in Italian comedy.
