CAROL BORLAND AND BELA LUGOSI - Lot 202
CAROL BORLAND AND BELA LUGOSI Dracula… during the filming of Tod Browning’s movie “Mark of the Vampire” (La Marque du vampire), 1935. Photo, later silver print (1972), credits (including date) below the image, labeled (tag) on the back. 25.7 x 20.6 cm including edges. Note: Bela Lugosi does not play Dracula here, but rather the mysterious Count Mora, a suspected vampire haunting a castle in Bohemia. Carroll Borland—credited in the film as “Carol Borland”—plays Luna, his daughter with a ghostly face and long dark hair. Their coordinated movements and somber appearance have left a lasting mark on the iconography of vampire cinema. Already famous for his role as Dracula in 1931, Lugosi had previously starred alongside Borland in a stage adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. Directed by Tod Browning, *Mark of the Vampire* draws on the plot of his now-lost silent film *London After Midnight* (1927), while blending horror with a detective story grounded in supernatural elements.
