MARIA SCHNEIDER AND MARLON BRANDO - Lot 204
MARIA SCHNEIDER AND MARLON BRANDO During the filming of Bernardo Bertolucci’s movie “Ultimo tango a Parigi” (Last Tango in Paris), 1972. Photo, vintage silver print, credits below the image, blank back. 20.3 x 25.7 cm, including borders. Note: Marlon Brando plays Paul, an American grieving the suicide of his wife, who meets Jeanne, a young Parisian played by Maria Schneider, in an empty apartment. There, the two strangers begin a clandestine sexual relationship, based on anonymity and gradually marked by Paul’s dominance. Presented upon its release as a work about sexual liberation, the film is today inextricably linked to the controversial circumstances surrounding its production. Maria Schneider, then nineteen years old, later explained that Bertolucci and Brando had not told her about the use of butter in the simulated sexual assault scene; she described the experience as deeply humiliating.
