LAURENCE DE MONAGNAN AND JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY - Lot 218
LAURENCE DE MONAGNAN AND JEAN-CLAUDE BRIALY During the filming of Eric Rohmer’s movie “Claire’s Knee,” 1970. Photograph, vintage silver print, captioned and annotated on the back. 20 x 30 cm. Note: Jean-Claude Brialy plays Jérôme, a thirty-five-year-old diplomat spending his last vacation as a bachelor on the shores of Lake Annecy before his wedding. There he reunites with Aurora, a novelist friend who encourages him to view his own games of seduction as a literary experiment. After growing close to the young Laura, Jérôme meets her half-sister Claire, played by Laurence de Monaghan, and develops a peculiar fascination with her knee. The fifth installment of Éric Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales, the film subtly analyzes desire, pride, and the intellectual justifications the character constructs around his behavior. Nestor Almendros’s luminous cinematography complements the summery setting of the lake and mountains.
