NICOLE LADMIRALE AND CLAUDE LAYDU - Lot 232
NICOLE LADMIRALE AND CLAUDE LAYDU During the filming of Robert Bresson’s movie *Diary of a Country Priest*, based on the novel by Georges Bernanos, 1951. Photograph, vintage silver print, stamped (including production stamp) and annotated on the back. 18 x 13 cm Note: Claude Laydu plays the young priest of Ambricourt, a sick and solitary man who takes charge of his first parish despite the indifference or hostility of his parishioners. Nicole Ladmiral plays Chantal, the daughter of the count and countess, a tormented teenager who harbors intense resentment toward her mother and pushes the priest to intervene in family conflicts. Adapting Georges Bernanos’s novel, Robert Bresson conveys the character’s inner journey through his diary and voice, in a minimalist style that downplays dramatic effects in favor of gestures, silences, and spiritual struggle. The film won, among other awards, the International Prize and the Prize for Best Cinematography at the Venice Film Festival.
