DOMINIQUE SANDA AND MATHIEU CARRIERE - Lot 233
DOMINIQUE SANDA AND MATHIEU CARRIERE During the filming of Marguerite Duras’s movie “Le Navire Night,” 1979. Photograph, silver print on vintage card stock, annotated on the back. 17.7 x 23.8 cm, including white borders. Red marks on the white borders. Note: *Le Navire Night* tells the story of a romantic relationship conducted exclusively over the phone between two strangers who never meet. Every night, they communicate anonymously via old, disused Parisian phone lines—relics of the Occupation. Dominique Sanda and Mathieu Carrière lend a visual presence to these separated lovers, but Marguerite Duras rejects any traditional portrayal: the actors remain silent while the voices and the narrative unfold independently of the images. The film also presents the actors, the makeup, and the sets as traces of an impossible shoot. This radical dissociation of sound and image transforms the love story into a meditation on desire, absence, and loneliness.
